Dramatic events Essay Example
Dramatic events Essay Example Dramatic events Essay Dramatic events Essay All three female characters being discussed all possess characteristics that help them survive through crisis despite societies opposition. In order to successfully defend their loved ones the female characters use common sense, flexibility, and quick thinking to steer themselves clearly away from further trouble. Medea has an advantage over Nora and Mrs. Linde because she is a powerful sorceress and has experience in plotting against her enemies even prior to her plot to avenge Jason. Since she is cunning she also thought and acted more cautiously. She knows exactly when to exert more power and when to play a foolish (Euripedes, p.89) woman to get what she wants from Aegeus, Jason, and Creon. Nora, in contrast, is obviously more sheltered than Medea because both her father and husband have treated her like a doll (Ibsen, p.226) for so long. Fortunately, she learns quickly and manages to find odd jobs to help her pay off her debt. She knows how to manipulate Torvald to get what she wants. Nora pouts like a child if she does not get her way or acts like Torvalds little songbird (p.223) to get her way . Her quick thinking in forging her fathers signature on the loan agreement is praiseworthy as well. She may have been arrested for doing so but it undoubtedly saved Torvalds life. Mrs. Linde is also wise in deciding she will have a greater chance of finding a job in a larger city. She is flexible and humble enough to ask for Noras help in finding a job. In addition, Mrs. Lindes judgement is fair. She does not become biased listening to Noras or Kronstads accounts regarding the blackmail issue. Instead, she looks at both sides of the story before choosing the best way to help solve this problem. Without common sense, flexibility, and quick thinking, the female characters would not have easily protected their loved ones. Most people have pride and they feel even more proud if they achieve something great. The women in these plays are proud as well. Medeas overwhelming pride is evident when she refuses to take Jasons money. She is confident that she can escape to safety using her own methods. She feels proud that she has gained her revenge and Jason is ruined at last. Likewise, Nora beams with pride as she describes to Mrs. Linde how she managed financially to pay off her debts and contributes to assisting her husband. Mrs. Linde has every right to be [proud] (p.159) that she is [making her] Mothers last days a little easier (p.159) and raising her brothers even if she has worked so very hard to achieve this end. Her choice of not remarrying someone rich shows that she is content with working independently to support her family. When the women in these plays initiate the tasks to help their families they are doing it through instinct and are not motivated by any other incentives. Their rewards are more valuable than money for they are able to obtain pride and the sense of accomplishment. The courageous acts that Medea, Nora, and Mrs. Linde have done to help others are triggered by dramatic events that are extremely realistic. The abandoning of a wife or family financial crisis could happen to women around the world as well as those in the play. There is certainly more assistance available for modern women in places like Canada in times of crisis, but that does not mean women are becoming more dependent. What were thought of as male characteristics in the plays are simply human characteristics and have simply been well adapted by modern women and by the female characters mentioned. Their accomplishments are admirable and demonstrate womens vast ability to adapt to change.

Business law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 2
Business law - Essay Example The company has grossly violated the contractual terms of the agreement they signed with Mark (Walsh, 2006, pg. 544). The grounds for Markââ¬â¢s dismissal are that he refused to accept orders from his boss. It is noteworthy that the two have a long history of misunderstanding and criticism of each otherââ¬â¢s leadership and professionalism. Whereas Mark accuses his boss for poor leadership and undue targeting with more work, Rebecca thinks that Mark is unprofessional in his attitude towards work (Walsh, 2006, pg. 544). Much as the company felt that they should dismiss Mark, they needed to follow due procedure provided for in the law and anchored in their contractual agreement. The claim that Mark shall use to win the case are many. First, Mark will need to prove that for the 12 years he worked for the company, he has never had a disciplinary issue and the misunderstanding between him and his boss are just based on dissenting opinion on how they perceive situations (Walsh, 2006, pg. 544). This is a valid reasoning because at every workplace, employees must not satisfy the perception of their bosses. Furthermore, the differences between Mark and his boss can better be resolved through conflict resolution mechanisms within the company, which were not even activated before his dismissal (Walsh, 2006, pg. 544). ... Therefore, when the company desires that Mark should work overtime, they should discuss and agreed how compensation for overtime work shall be done (Walsh 2006, pg. 212). The approach Rebecca gave Mark that he should remain behind and work overtime should have been done in a better way. There was supposed to be an agreement signed to dictate how any work that Mark does overtime shall be compensated. Furthermore, there is nowhere in the contract where Mark was to work overtime (Walsh, 2006, pg. 108). Whereas it was better for Mark to show respect for his boss, this was not going to be possible through forcing him to work overtime disregarding plans that he might have had for the evening. Thirdly, Mark shall argue against the procedure the company followed to dismiss him. Mark will show that the company violated his employment and contractual rights. The company is entitled to give Mark 12 weeksââ¬â¢ notice before they dismiss him according to their contractual agreement. Therefore, the company violated this agreement thus leading to wrongful dismissal (Korn and Sethi, 2011, pg. 8). While arguing this case, the mark shall need to prove that the wrongful dismissal has caused him several challenges. The dismissal has caused him to lose his source of income immediately putting him into dire financial problems. Furthermore, he has the rights to seek legal redress on this matter. Mark will need to prove that through the legal process he should be allowed to access the remedies he has. The remedies he has for a wrongful dismissal include reinstatement and compensation (Korn and Sethi, 2011, pg. 8). Therefore, this is a strong case against the company because disciplinary procedures do not form part of Markââ¬â¢s contractual agreement with the company.

The Concept of Modern State - Essay Example Although the majority of modern states fit Weberââ¬â¢s definition there are also some states with characteristics that do not fit Weberââ¬â¢s description. For example, failure of the state to have a total monopoly over ââ¬Ëthe means of legitimate physical violence over a definite territoryââ¬â¢ or absence of any reasons for addressing the legitimacy of such monopoly as rational-legal does not necessarily mean that the state represents another form of political organization. Eventually once-almighty Catholic Church as well as the lesser nobility lost much of their power, and the fragmented system of feudal states was replaced by another system characterised by full control over a definite geographical region and unitarism (Llewellen 1983). The political and religious conflicts that occurred within the course of the centralisation process culminated in the Peace of Westphalia (1648). This treaty is considered one of the important milestones in history of the contemporary system of nation-states: the Peace recognised fixed national boundaries and the sovereignty of states within their territories. Eventually, the system of centralized and increasingly bureaucratic rule known as

Poetry Walt Whitman I Hear America Singing Essay
In I Hear America Singing Walt Whitman paid tribute to the workers of America. Whitman included every worker that he could think of, including the women and the girls who stayed home and do house chores. Whitman pictured them as happy and contented people who put dignity and respect in labor. In the poem the worker carried the physical burden of his work with a light heart that made him sing. In the first line, the entire country was euphoric and they sang different songs in unison. Whitman used varied carols to describe the emotion of America. Carols were usually sang on Christmas seasons when people were upbeat and matched perfectly the celebratory mood of the holidays. In the poem the Americans did not sing ordinary songs but those like carols which were mostly cheery and bouncy. He started off with the mechanic whose song he characterized with strength and blitheness. The carpenter lay down the plank and put up the beam. His job was physically demanding but he still managed to sing. The mason looked forward to another day of work and he sang along the way. Anything that we are eager to face everyday as something that gives us pleasure is reason enough for us to sing out our feelings, which was exactly the case of the mason in the poem. The boatman sang out the things he needed for his boat was a novel way of doing his job of checking the tools of his trade. The deckhand sang from the deck where he can see the vast expanse of the sea. This was how he gave in to his feelings of exhilaration, freedom and joy. Creativity flows from the shoemaker and the hatter as they each went about their routine work. Whether sitting down or standing up they were at their most comfortable that singing came naturally easy for them. In the woods and in the farms, the song came from the cutter and the farmer as they labored from sunlight to sundown. Their task can be back-breaking but by singing they lightened their burden and provided themselves respite especially at midday. The women who did the cooking, sewing and washing also sang to cast away their boredom and in its place welcomed the gladness in doing their domestic chores for their love ones. Walt Whitman spoke of lightness of feelings, despite the demands of work. He used contrasts in the poem. He associated work with heavy and song with light. He made an attempt and succeeded in uniting or putting the contrasts together by making the worker sing. The worker sang not to please an audience but he sang for himself. Singing did many things to the workers: sustained the jolly mood of the mechanic, lightened the load of the carpenter, opened the exciting day of the mason, puts novelty in the boatmanââ¬â¢s job, let the thrill in to the deckhand, fed creativity in the routine for the shoemaker and the hatter, provided a restful break for the woodcutter and the farmer, and took the boredom away and inspired the women in their home chores. Walt Whitman used free verse in I Hear America Singing as well as imagery of men with different occupations giving in to the urge and lightness of feeling to want to burst into a song. With free verse he was able to compose a picture of uncontained happiness of a man in doing his job. Free verse was suggestive that work was not a bondage to the man but the source of his joy. Whitman made an unrestrained enumeration of workers who sing as they work, giving the readers an impression that there were many of them with similar attitudes and feelings towards their work. In the title, it was not the workers he heard singing, but the whole country of America. Again, with the free verse, his scope was not limited to those he enumerates. He collectively hears everyone in America. The working man is America, whatever his occupation may be. He gives tribute to the workers, he gives tribute to America.

Hence, makeup can help those women who look not nice or have some skin problems that they probably lack of confidence. The reason why they lack of confidence is it is so imperative to make a great first impression due to the world is so cruel and superficial. People do judge a book by its cover. Since, makeup is a social manner and it influence how people think about others; women should be able to apply make-up since it is a social manner in todayââ¬â¢s world. This is a 9% increase since 2000. â⬠( Douglas, C. 2009, Lifestyle Commentator). Hence, it is not surprise to see men apply makeup or buy cosmetics now. Hence, the makeup needs to reapply according to the change of sunlight. Last but not least, men taking more time to putting on make-up on their faces than women in everyday in order to cover the pore or scar on their faces. According to Chrissy Dolezal (2007), ââ¬Å"there are a different between men and women and although men wearing cosmetics seems to be crossing a barrier that was once there; makeup needs to be applied differently to men than it does to women. â⬠(Chrissy, 2009). So, men need to apply and learn makeup correctly to avoid lead to skin problems. Some of the men are stress about the pimples on their faces due to the skin problems or hormone problems. The acne scar will leave on the faces though the acne may be removing. So, the men need concealer stick to hide the scar on their faces to keep their physical outlook good looking. Other than that, their faces are look cleanses and good after make-up was applied. This helps them to keep their skin look health and young looking. Therefore, it is necessary for men to apply makeup too. In conclusion, makeup was the right of men, too, and no longer the sole right for women only.
